Album: "Second Term" VÖ: 22.09.23 Leopard Records / Broken Silence Als Nachfolger ihres selbstbetitelten Debüts aus dem Jahr 2015 legt die Kennedy Administration auf „Second Term“ noch einmal eine Schippe drauf. Erneut mit dem dynamischen Gesang der charismatischen Soul-Diva Kennedy und den Talenten von Keyboarder/Komponist/Produzent und musikalischem Leiter Ondre J, bringt diese in Brooklyn ansässige Ansammlung von Groovemeistern eine unwiderstehliche Mischung aus Funk, Rock, Soul und Spaß auf ihr erhebendes zweites Album. Vom Rufus & Chaka Khan-artigen Upbeat-Vibe von "(Let Me) Be Your Lucky Number" bis zur gefühlvollen Ballade "Butterfly in Chains", vom knallenden Funk von "Best Is Yet to Come" über rockige Nummern wie "Addicted to Addictions" und "After All These Lies" bis zu rauchigen Torch-Songs wie "Runway, Gate, Taxi" und "Tuesday Feelings" sowie dem eingängigen Pop-Song "Everyday Thank You" deckt die Kennedy Administration auf "Second Term" ein breites Spektrum an Musikstilen ab. Der Techno-Tanzflächenabschluss "Let's Party" ist das Sahnehäubchen auf dieser köstlichen Torte, die Kennedy und ihre feierwütigen Mitstreiter mit Genuss servieren. Der in der Tschechischen Republik geborene Ondre J Pivec, der derzeit auch Mitglied der Tourneeband des Grammy-Preisträgers Gregory Porter ist, scheint ein unwahrscheinlicher Partner für Kennedy zu sein, der auf einer Farm in Bellville, Michigan, geboren wurde und mit dem Singen in der Kirche aufwuchs, bevor er Ella Fitzgerald, Anita Baker, Sade und Prince nacheiferte. Aber ihre musikalische Partnerschaft wurde in Gang gesetzt, als sie sich vor fast 10 Jahren im Club Groove im Herzen von New York Citys Greenwich Village trafen. "The minute we started playing together, something clicked right away", erinnert sich Ondre. "It seemed like we both knew what to do to make things work. It was like magic." Und Kennedy fügt hinzu: "Our energy when we’re together is just fire-cracking! And from the first album to now, we’ve matured and grown so much. And I think you can hear that in the new music." Kennedy erklärt: "We have the reputation of being a band with a great live experience, and these brief clips captured that. I also wanted our fans from those places to feel nostalgic when they heard it. Like, ‘Oh my God! I was at that show!’ I feel that draws people in a little bit more and maybe makes them listen a little harder." Ondre fügte hinzu: "Our thing is to take you on a journey. It’s something that we’re known for and that we’re trying to communicate. So this was our way of recreating that concert experience, by connecting the songs with those live intros and outros. And these were significant moments for us as well.“ Nachdem sie zwei Jahre lang von COVID unterbrochen worden waren, trafen sich Kennedy und Ondre im Februar 2022 in New York wieder, um gemeinsam an Songs für ihr zweites Album zu arbeiten. Ondre erinnert sich: We just got together, hung out, drank a whole bunch of booze and started fooling around with music. First, the song ‘Runway, Gate, Taxi’ came to life in one afternoon with just Kennedy on a mic and me on a keyboard. Then I took the keyboard parts and doctored them up and ended up programing a drum beat to it. And we realized, ‘Oh, my God! We actually have a song that’s amazing. Let’s do a whole album!’ So that began a process of writing more new songs like ‘Be Your Lucky Number,’ ‘Tuesday Feelings’ and ‘After All Those Lies’ and redoing some of the older things that we had demoed in 2018 and 2019, like ‘Butterfly in Chains’ and ‘Addicted to Addictions.’ It was a quest of taking what we had, keeping the integrity of the tunes, but bringing it up to date, sound-wise.” “What was really frightening was the thought that maybe the first album was all we had,” sagte Kennedy. “Because it’s intimidating to go from being on stage five, six nights a week to absolutely nothing for two years during the pandemic. So you don’t know if the magic is still there after all that time of being separated. But when we finally did get back together, we were both relieved to find out that it still is.” Diese unauslöschliche Chemie ist in jedem Titel von Second Term, dem triumphalen Comeback der Kennedy Administration, zu hören. “We were kind of pushing each other on this recording,” so Kennedy. “When we were writing the music together and coming up with the changes and choruses, we were always thinking. ‘How can we make this song better?’ So I wanted the vocal performances to line up perfectly with the material. And thankfully, Ondre just creates a landscape for me that allows me to go in these places that I don’t think a lot of other writers or producers would be willing to go. Most producers like to stay within these small boxes, but our attitude is, ‘Why limit yourself?’ We have amazing audiences — people from around the world who love our music — so why not give them something new that they can play all the way through and then go back listen to again and again?” „Second Term“, auf dem auch das Rhythmus-Tandem Chelton Grey (E-Bass) und Nathaniel Townsley (Schlagzeug) sowie die Trompeter Keyon Harrold und Josh Evans, die Gitarristen Dan Muniz, Marc Malsegna und Jordan Peters, der Bassist Jay White und der Rapper Peter Gunz zu hören sind, wird voraussichtlich im Sommer 2023 auf Leopard Records erscheinen. |
