Liv Warfield
Single: "Maybe They'll Take Your Picture" VÖ: 04.08.23
Über den von Prince inspirierten Titeltrack, der Edge eröffnet, sagt sie: "I had the lyrics written a couple years back, but Jay McK (bass), Ryan Waters (guitar) and Marlon Patton (drums) went into the studio and just came up with this track so fast. It was beautiful to witness. I just started swaying back and forth, thinking about the first time I met Prince and my auditioning process at Paisley Park. The first time I sang for him was quiet and a bit restrained. The second time I sang it was louder, more confident. I remember thinking, ‘I’ll just close my eyes, ‘cause I don’t want to look. I’ll just feel with my heart. That should be all it takes.’ And that is the feeling I wanted this song to have. It’s very much a song about how ‘Purple music’ takes me. It’s kind of a nod to Prince, a thank you of sorts for pulling me out of my comfort zone." Ryan Waters' "Maybe They'll Take Your Picture" ist ein bläsergetriebener Funk-Song, der an die Tower of Power-Hymne "What Is Hip?" aus dem Jahr 1973 erinnert und bei dem die britischen Triple Horns und ein starkes Posaunensolo von Roy Agee von den NPGHornz im Stil von Fred Wesley zu hören sind. Waters erklärt: "This song is mostly a commentary on how backwards the ambition for recognition, acknowledgment and fame has become. It used to be that you lived and accomplished something that was worthy of somebody taking your picture. Whereas, now we post the picture first and hope that people will think we’re important after they see it." The Unexpected zusammenarbeitete: "Ryan, that’s my brother. I’ve known him for over 20 years. He is an incredible writer and a killer guitar player, and he has this mystique about him that I love. You can’t figure him out at times. Ryan was truly the catalyst for me wanting to start this music career off. We met during AOL chat days and I told him then that I wanted to start a band. This was around the time he had just gotten hired to be Sade’s guitarist for her tour. He invited me to a Sade show and I had tears in my eyes. I knew then that this was what I wanted to do. I wanted to artistically create, write songs and be on stage. I wanted to perform." "I absolutely love this song!”, sagt sie. "I had the pleasure of working with Julien on a JoonMoon album in 2020 and it really inspired me in a lot of ways. I heard their previous JoonMoon project (2017’s Moonshine Corner), and Krystle Warren’s voice on “Chess” from that album had me spellbound. I wanted to record this song like a power ballad. I felt every lyric to my core. I just wanted to convey my emotions on this song…how I felt it. And I was super-inspired by it." LiV äußerte sich zu ihrer autobiografischen Moll-Klage "Bloom": "The last seven years have been tough. Even before the pandemic I was struggling to stay afloat mentally/emotionally. I was pretending that everything was great when in fact I couldn’t even get a gig. I was not in a good place and I had to truly rise up out of this mud. But when I met producer Chris Joyner through playing with Nancy Wilson in Roadcase Royal, he played me this track with the incredible string arrangement by Stevie Blacke, and the lyrics just poured out of me like a purge was happening. As soon as I said the line — Somewhere along the line I chose to do it different — I knew I had to change some things about me that I didn’t like. I had to do a frequency shift and change my energy up to what is possible. I had to plant and sow different seeds in my life to get to this point. My long time friend from Portland, Max Ribner, added a trumpet coda that invoked my pain into these roses opening right up” Das treibende "Get 2 Know" von LiV wurde von der Afrobeat-Legende Fela Kuti inspiriert. "I came to Jay McK and an incredible percussionist named Frank Moka, asking if they could help me with something Fela-inspired, and Frank nailed it. We went to the studio and in typical Frank Moka fashion he was producing all the parts in his head, and he was moving fast. I also had the honor of having Bobby Sparks, Mark Letteri, JT Thomas and Jelani Brooks from Snarky Puppy in the studio all at the same time on this track. It’s about discovering and celebrating my culture." LiV gibt Phil Collins' "Another Day in Paradise", einem Song über die Auseinandersetzung mit Obdachlosen, der 1989 auf Collins' Album ...But Seriously erschien, ihre ganz persönliche Note. “I think this song resonates deeper than the homeless for me,” sagte sie. “When I hear it I think about social injustice all around. We are about to be living in the ‘Have and Have nots’ society. We are actually already in it, to be honest. The condition of the heart is all we have to hold on to. Think twice; people don’t even have time to do that anymore. So it’s important to me to bring this song back into the fold again.” Über Ryans Hard-Rock-Song "Stare" sagt sie: “It’s one of those songs you just gotta dive into an go crazy with. I think it’s really about letting go. It’s infectious energy, where you can’t sit still.” This one has a lot of meanings for me personally. I think at times I was focusing on me, being my own ‘savior.’ Basically looking around for others to get me out of the trenches. When I was the one saving myself from myself. Other times, the song resonates with me about God and people who’ve supported me. It’s an all-encompassing feeling. And I definitely wanted it to sound intimate, almost like a prayer.” Über ihr drittes Album sagte Warfield: “Edge is the continuum of LiV. I think I had to live some life to get to this voice I have now. I didn’t think I would get here to release another album. So I can’t thank everyone enough for being there to see this vision through.” “Prince was a master teacher”, sagte LiV über ihren einstigen Mentor. “And he still continues to teach. He brought me in the band at a time where I was very green in the industry. He knew that, and he really showed me grace by helping to develop my ear, talent and skill as a performer. I was soaking everything up from studio sessions, live performances. I was in this purple utopia and was living my best life! I think he was pulling out some of the rock-soul sound I had stirred up inside of me. And when I found it, it unlocked a whole new world.” |
